The Experiments in Text

Hurrah Hurrah was formed in 2014 with our first project, The Experiments in Text. These were a series of experiments, using physical and devising techniques to tackle texts.

We secured a 9-month artist residency from Woollahra Council. This residency was for visual artists but Ali convinced them to give it to her.  It included access to a small artists studio where we had meetings and stored our sets. There was a small ballet studio upstairs that we were not supposed to access....but we did anyway.  We'd rehearse into the night, sometimes just playing and a funny security guard would come around and stand at the door and accidentally scare us. He was a cool guy.

With this support, we not only experimented with new ideas, we were able to create our first public performances. We  produced a very intimate version of The Seagull in a Pop Up Theatre in an empty shop in The Rocks! (in colab with The Rocks Pop Project & HotBLOODed Theatre Co). We did endless experiments and exercises that formed our first original show TRADE but importantly, we had a place to hang out and get excited about what we were doing.

We worked with incredible artists to experiment on our craft and figure out what we were all about:

The Seagull: Jade Fuda, Maxine Appel-Cohen, Alison Bennett, Mitchell Bowker, Daniel Csutkai, Cecilia Morrow, Julian Pulvermacher, Milan Pulvermacher, Ross Scott, Anthony White

Frenzy for Two: Alex Sideratos, Alison Bennett

'' This was a marvelous piece of chamber theatre which the small audience- some twenty people- enjoyed greatly. All the nuances of Chekhov’s wonderful text came through as the cast weaved their way around the audience.''

''This production is an experiment in ensemble work. The cast have worked together...for some time, exploring the character dynamics in Chekhov’s play. The result is a production that’s a joy to watch. The reactions of the actors alone are worth the admission price. These are fascinating performances. ''

HH acknowledges  the  Wangal and Gadigal lands of the Eora nation on which we create. We pay our respects to the custodians of these lands and we recognise that all country was stolen. These lands were never ceded. We honour the millennia of storytellers who have been working and playing here since the beginning.
